Nestled in the heart of the Spanish countryside, our journey began with one act of compassion and grew into a lifelong mission to help dogs in need.
Colleen Jay and her husband Peter moved from Ireland to Spain in 2000, hoping to enjoy a peaceful early retirement with their two beloved Irish Wolfhounds. They settled in Benferri, in the Vega Baja region, but their lives soon took an unexpected turn.
While Peter was briefly back in Ireland completing a job, Colleen found a dog abandoned outside a local shop. Unable to turn her back on him, she brought him home. When Peter returned, they both realised that something needed to be done about the many stray and unwanted dogs in the area.
Peter began building a few kennels by hand, followed by a few more. Before long, every kennel was occupied. Today, we care for more than 100 dogs at any one time, each requiring daily food, clean water, veterinary care, medication, exercise, attention and love.
Running a dog rescue centre is a huge responsibility and comes with significant ongoing costs. Food, veterinary treatment, medicines, vaccinations, sterilisation, maintenance, utilities and essential supplies all require constant funding. The workload is demanding, every single day, and caring for so many dogs would simply not be possible without our dedicated volunteers.
We also rely entirely on the generosity of the public to keep the rescue running. Donations are needed more than ever to ensure that every dog receives the care and support they deserve. With your help, and the continued commitment of our volunteers, we can continue giving these dogs safety, comfort and the chance of a better life.
